The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority has issued a heavy rainfall warning covering Nairobi and several other parts of the country, urging residents to prepare for possible flooding, strong winds and poor visibility.

In an advisory released on Friday, October 23, the weatherman said moderate to heavy rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres within 24 hours was expected in affected regions between October 24 and October 30, 2026.

The warning covers parts of the Coast, Northeastern region, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, Central Highlands and Southeastern Lowlands.

According to Kenya Met, the rainfall is expected to be accompanied by strong winds exceeding 46 kilometres per hour, particularly in coastal, eastern and northern areas.

The heaviest rainfall is forecast between October 26 and October 28, after which the intensity is expected to decrease.

Counties Expected to Receive Heavy Rainfall

The advisory lists several counties across the country as potentially affected by the anticipated weather conditions.

In the Coast and Northeastern regions, the counties include Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and Isiolo.

Other affected areas include Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi and Uasin Gishu.

The warning also covers Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Narok and Kajiado.

Residents in Taita-Taveta, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni and parts of Nairobi have also been urged to remain alert.

However, rainfall distribution may vary within individual counties, meaning some locations could experience heavier downpours than others.

Residents Warned About Flash Floods

Kenya Met has cautioned residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant for flash floods, warning that flooding can occur even in places that have not experienced heavy rainfall.

Areas located downstream and near rivers or drainage channels could be particularly vulnerable when water flows from locations experiencing intense rainfall.

Motorists and pedestrians have been urged to exercise caution during heavy downpours because poor visibility and flooded roads can increase the risk of accidents.

Residents should avoid walking or driving through flooded roads and waterways. Those living in flood-prone areas are also encouraged to monitor changing conditions and follow official emergency instructions.

The authority further advised people to avoid sheltering under trees or standing near grilled windows during thunderstorms because of the risk of lightning strikes.

Strong Winds and High Ocean Waves Expected

Apart from the rainfall warning, Kenya Met has forecast strong winds in some coastal, eastern and northern areas.

Ocean wave heights exceeding two metres are also expected on Sunday, October 25, prompting a caution to fishers, mariners and other people involved in maritime activities.

Those working or travelling on the ocean have been urged to take appropriate precautions and follow updated weather advisories.

Meanwhile, high temperatures are expected to persist in some parts of northern Kenya. Residents in hotter regions have been advised to remain hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Rainy Season Outlook

The latest warning comes as Kenyans await the October-November-December short-rains season, which is expected to bring rainfall to different parts of the country.

Although some areas have continued experiencing sunny and dry conditions, Kenya Met says the coming days could bring more significant rainfall in the regions covered by its latest advisory.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official weather updates as conditions develop and take precautions against flooding, strong winds and thunderstorms.

The authority may issue further updates if there are significant changes to the forecast.
