US President Donald Trump has suspended a new package of sanctions targeting Russia, just days before the measures were due to take effect, raising fresh questions about Washington’s approach to Moscow’s war against Ukraine.

The decision, announced on Friday, October 16, 2026, came through an executive order in which Trump cited the national interest of the United States as the reason for waiving the sanctions.

The measures were part of legislation Trump signed into law last month, designed to increase economic pressure on Russia over its ongoing war against Ukraine.

The development comes amid growing tensions between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose government has been seeking stronger American support as Russian attacks continue.

According to CNN, the latest move has also raised concerns among European allies about the future of Washington’s commitment to helping Kyiv defend itself. <Cite refs={[“turn817923search0″,”turn817923search14”]}/>

Trump Administration Shifts Approach to Russia

The sanctions legislation was designed to give the US government additional tools to penalise Russia and countries purchasing Russian energy products.

Among its provisions were potential tariffs on imports from countries continuing to buy Russian oil, natural gas and other energy resources.

However, Trump’s latest executive order pauses the application of the relevant sanctions, restrictions and duties.

The decision represents a significant change in the implementation of legislation intended to increase pressure on Moscow.

The White House has also been pushing Ukraine to halt attacks on Russian oil facilities, arguing that disruptions to energy supplies could contribute to higher oil prices in the United States ahead of the November midterm elections.

Zelensky Faces Growing Challenges in Washington

The sanctions decision comes as relations between Trump and Zelensky continue to deteriorate.

Washington has urged Kyiv to stop targeting Russian energy infrastructure, while Ukraine has argued that Russia must also halt its attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.

Zelensky briefly suspended attacks on Russian oil refineries following American requests but later announced that Ukraine would resume them, saying Russia had failed to respect the proposed energy ceasefire.

Ukraine has continued to seek additional air-defence support and other military assistance from its Western partners as Russian attacks intensify.

The growing disagreement has raised concerns in Kyiv and European capitals about whether the United States will maintain its previous level of support.

European Allies Rally Behind Ukraine

European leaders have continued expressing support for Zelensky as diplomatic tensions between Washington and Kyiv grow.

At a meeting in Brussels, European officials emphasised the need to maintain pressure on Russia and strengthen assistance to Ukraine.

The European Union has also been preparing further sanctions against Moscow, signalling a different approach from Trump’s decision to pause the newly enacted American measures.

The developments highlight widening differences between Washington and some of its European allies over how to respond to Russia’s invasion.

For Ukraine, the immediate challenge is to maintain international support while defending its territory and seeking additional protection against Russian attacks.

The suspension of the sanctions package adds another layer of uncertainty to diplomatic efforts surrounding the war, with the future direction of US policy likely to remain a major issue in the coming weeks.
