KDF Opens Talks With Jordan Over Specialised Drone Warfare Training

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is exploring new military training opportunities with Jordan as the two countries seek to strengthen cooperation in modern warfare, particularly in drone operations and counter-drone technology.

The discussions took place during a meeting between Kenya’s Deputy Army Commander, Major General John Nkoimo, and his Jordanian counterpart, Major General Majdi Al-Harasis, in Aqaba, Jordan.

According to Kenya’s Ministry of Defence, the two military leaders explored possible specialised training programmes covering counterterrorism, drone operations and capabilities to detect and neutralise hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

However, authorities have not announced a formal agreement or timeline for implementing the proposed training programmes.

The discussions come amid growing concerns over the use of drones in modern military operations. Unmanned aircraft are increasingly being deployed for surveillance, intelligence gathering and attacks against military installations and critical infrastructure.

Kenya and Jordan already maintain defence cooperation through joint military exercises, including Swift Eagle and Eager Lion, as well as participation in the International Warrior Competition.

The latest engagements were held during the 15th Special Operations Forces Exhibition and Conference (SOFEX), which took place alongside the Middle East Special Operations Commanders Conference from October 26 to 29.

The international event attracted more than 400 official delegations from over 75 countries and 350 companies showcasing military equipment and emerging technologies.

Jordan also presented more than 49 locally developed defence products, including drone systems, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity technologies.

Major General Nkoimo praised Jordan’s progress in developing military technologies, highlighting the importance of innovation in responding to emerging security threats.

The proposed cooperation could provide additional opportunities for specialised training and strengthen Kenya’s ability to respond to evolving military challenges.
