Senator Okong’o Omogeni, appearing on Citizen TV’s DayBreak, passionately defended ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna amid growing internal tensions within the party.
He described Sifuna as a dedicated figure who has “made so many enemies as a sacrifice for that party called ODM,” highlighting the young leader’s loyalty and the personal costs endured in service to the Orange Democratic Movement.
Omogeni emphasized that Raila skillfully maintained alliances and walked closely with his supporters without resorting to expulsions or firings. He warned that pursuing such punitive measures—expelling members or dismissing key figures—would ultimately weaken and dismantle the party from within.
“If you want to start expelling people from parties and firing people, you will finish that party,” he stated.
Omogeni further cautioned that repeated internal purges would leave ODM as “a shell” by the time critical negotiations arise, allowing President William Ruto to benefit politically. “Every day you do that, Ruto is smiling because by the time you go into negotiations, you will be a shell,” he added.

The remarks come against a backdrop of reported calls from some ODM quarters to sideline or expel Sifuna, amid broader debates on party discipline, unity, and opposition strategy ahead of future elections. Omogeni’s intervention underscores divisions within ODM and the risks of fracturing a once-cohesive opposition force.
