Tanzania is mourning the loss of a music legend, Mzee Steven Hiza, the renowned composer and performer best known for the patriotic anthem “Tanzania Yetu” (also called “Tanzania Yetu Ndio Nchi ya Furaha”).
Through his official X account, President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed deep sorrow upon receiving the news of his passing. She described Hiza as a “nguli wa muziki” (music giant) and praised his enduring contribution to Tanzania’s music sector.
The iconic song, which he composed, has adorned the nation, reminded citizens of their national duty, educated and entertained generations for nearly 60 years.
President Samia extended condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and all touched by the loss, praying for their patience and strength during this difficult time.
She concluded with a heartfelt supplication: “Mwenyezi Mungu ailaze roho yake mahali pema peponi. Amina.” (May the Almighty God rest his soul in a peaceful place in paradise. Amen.)
Hiza’s “Tanzania Yetu” remains a timeless symbol of unity, joy, and national pride, often evoking the spirit of “nchi ya furaha” (country of happiness).
