Prof Makau Mutua, a prominent Kenyan constitutional scholar and senior advisor to President William Ruto, has sharply criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in a scathing X post.
Mutua dismissed Gachagua’s recent advocacy for the Somali community in North Eastern Kenya as insincere and opportunistic.
In his post, Mutua argued that no “intelligent soul” should take Gachagua seriously when he positions himself as a champion of the “Somali hoi poloi.”
He accused the former DP of shedding “fake crocodile tears” and questioned the sudden timing of Gachagua’s concern for Somalis as full Kenyan citizens with “shares”.
Mutua suggested Gachagua—referred to derogatorily as “Wamunyoro” and “the man from Mathira”—is cynically exploiting the historical marginalization and current hardships of Somalis in the region to attack their leaders for supporting President Ruto.

Mutua emphasized that Gachagua would remain silent if those leaders were his allies, labeling him hypocritical, hateful, and manipulative.
He urged Somalis not to let outsiders “steal their agency,” asserting that the community has capable voices to address mal-governance and corruption independently.
This critique arises amid ongoing debates over drought, neglect, and leadership accountability in North Eastern Kenya, where Gachagua recently highlighted severe humanitarian and corruption issues.

Mutua’s remarks reflect deeper political tensions, portraying Gachagua’s intervention as politically motivated rather than genuine.
