Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has broken his silence amid the growing tension and chaos in the county linked to the Saba Saba protests, choosing instead to offer a heartfelt tribute following the death of a respected Catholic priest.
Taking to social media, Kang’ata announced the passing of Fr. Irungu Samuel, a former priest at Mumbi Parish in Murang’a Town.
“Fr Irungu Samuel has passed on,” the Governor stated solemnly. “He once served Mumbi Parish Murang’a Town. We render deepest condolences to his family and the entire Catholic congregation of Murang’a Diocese. May Heaven’s gates remain wide open for you.”
The Governor’s message comes at a time when Murang’a is experiencing unrest tied to the July 7th (Saba Saba) protests, largely led by Gen Z and civil society groups demanding accountability, youth inclusion, and systemic reforms.
Several towns across the county, including Murang’a Town, have witnessed demonstrations, roadblocks, and confrontations with police officers.
Kang’ata’s focus on the late priest rather than the protests has drawn mixed reactions, with some residents praising his empathy during a moment of loss, while others urge him to address the growing public discontent on the ground.
Fr. Irungu Samuel is remembered as a dedicated servant of the Church and a spiritual guide to many in Murang’a. His death marks a moment of mourning for the Catholic faithful and the broader community even as political tensions escalate.
