Conservative commentator Benny Johnson has sounded the alarm over remarks made by former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper, suggesting that Clapper may be fearing legal consequences over his role in the controversial Russia-gate scandal.
During a recent appearance on CNN, Clapper was asked, “What will you do if they come after you?” Without hesitation, the former intelligence chief replied, “I’ll lawyer up. Already have.”
Johnson seized on the comment, calling it a clear indication that Clapper is bracing for potential prosecution.
“This is HUGE,” Johnson wrote. “Former DNI James Clapper admits he’s worried about being prosecuted for his role in the Russia-gate hoax and has already lawyered up.”
Clapper was one of the senior officials who signed the infamous October 2020 letter that dismissed the Hunter Biden laptop story as “Russian disinformation.”
That letter was later discredited, and critics argue it was a politically motivated attempt to sway the presidential election.
Republicans have long accused Clapper and others in the intelligence community of weaponizing their positions to undermine Donald Trump’s presidency through what they call a baseless narrative of Russian collusion.

With House Republicans and various watchdog groups continuing to probe the origins and handling of the Russia-gate investigation, Clapper’s legal preparations have fueled speculation that accountability could be on the horizon.
Johnson’s statement underscores growing calls among conservatives for justice to be served in what they view as one of the most egregious abuses of intelligence power in modern history.
