According to EACC, the land belongs to the State Department for Housing and Urban Development and was originally reserved for government housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recovery followed a consent agreement adopted by the Environment and Land Court on September 22, 2026, after the registered owner agreed to surrender their interest in the property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the agreement, the court directed the Chief Land Registrar to correct the land records by cancelling entries relating to the lease issued to the private individual, paving the way for the government to reclaim ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EACC investigations established that the land had been reserved and developed for government housing before it was allocated to a private individual through a letter of allotment issued on December 10, 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite its public status, a lease was registered in the individual&#8217;s name on June 4, 1993. However, the three houses continued to serve as government residences and remained listed in the Government Building Register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest recovery forms part of EACC&#8217;s wider efforts to reclaim public property allegedly acquired through irregular allocations and protect government assets from private ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commission has continued pursuing similar cases across the country, seeking to return land reserved for public use to the relevant government institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kakamega recovery is another significant development in the fight against illegal acquisition of public land, particularly property intended to provide housing for government officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Source:<\/strong> Kenyans.co.ke and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has recovered public land valued at Ksh40 million in Kakamega County, including three government houses that had been allocated to a private individual.
