The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has received eight refurbished military helicopters from South Korea through a defence partnership supported by the United States, in a move expected to strengthen Kenya’s military aviation capabilities.

The helicopters were officially handed over on Friday, October 23, 2026, during a ceremony held at the Kenya Army Corps of Aviation headquarters in Embakasi, Nairobi.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya presided over the handover, which brought together senior Kenyan military officials and representatives from South Korea and the United States.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the aircraft were donated by South Korea, while the US government supported their refurbishment, installation of advanced digital systems and training of Kenyan pilots and technicians.

The transfer forms part of international cooperation aimed at strengthening Kenya’s capacity to conduct security operations and contribute to regional peacekeeping missions.

How the Helicopters Will Boost KDF Operations

The eight aircraft are MD500 military helicopters, lightweight helicopters designed for roles including observation, surveillance and reconnaissance. Depending on their configuration, the aircraft can also support other military missions.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Tuya said the helicopters would improve the KDF’s ability to gather intelligence, provide aerial support, move personnel and respond to security threats.

Chief of the Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri said the aircraft would support counterterrorism operations as well as peacekeeping missions and humanitarian assistance.

The helicopters are expected to add to Kenya’s existing aviation capabilities as the military continues to address security challenges in the Horn of Africa.

However, their operational contribution will depend on the missions assigned to them, the equipment fitted and the military’s ability to maintain them.

Why the United States Was Involved

Although South Korea supplied the helicopters, the United States played a significant role in preparing them for service in Kenya.

The aircraft had previously been operated by the South Korean military before being retired and transferred for refurbishment. They underwent maintenance and repair work in the United States before being delivered to Kenya.

The US also supported the installation of digital systems and provided training to Kenyan personnel responsible for flying and maintaining the helicopters.

The partnership therefore combines South Korea’s equipment donation with American technical support and Kenya’s commitment to developing its military aviation personnel.

The donation is a transfer of previously operated aircraft rather than a new purchase of eight helicopters by the Kenyan government.

South Korea’s Commitment to Peacekeeping

The transfer is linked to South Korea’s commitment to supporting United Nations peacekeeping operations in Africa.

South Korea pledged to provide helicopters for peacekeeping activities during a UN peacekeeping ministerial conference held in Seoul in 2021. The United States subsequently committed to supporting maintenance and transportation arrangements.

The aircraft are expected to strengthen air mobility for missions that require personnel and equipment to be moved efficiently, including peace support operations.

South Korean Ambassador to Kenya Kang Hyung-shik said the transfer reflected the growing diplomatic, economic and security relationship between the two countries, which established diplomatic relations in 1964.

US Chargé d’Affaires Susan Burns also highlighted the importance of cooperation between Kenya, South Korea and the United States in addressing security challenges in East Africa and supporting international peacekeeping efforts.

Senior Military Officials Attend Handover

The ceremony was attended by senior Kenyan defence officials, including Chief of the Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri and Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, alongside representatives from the two partner countries.

The Ministry of Defence said the initiative would contribute to strengthening military readiness through modernised aircraft, specialised training and international cooperation.

The arrival of the eight helicopters marks another step in Kenya’s efforts to improve its aviation capabilities while deepening defence partnerships with international allies.
