It plans to increase the number of stations to about 70 and support more than 1,000 electric vehicles by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than manufacturing motorcycles, SUN Mobility focuses on battery-swapping technology. The system allows riders to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones within minutes, reducing the time spent waiting for their vehicles to recharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Much Will Boda Boda Riders Pay?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company&#8217;s daily battery subscription plan for boda boda riders costs Sh400 and provides four kilowatt-hours of energy, which SUN Mobility says can power a motorcycle for approximately 100 kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional energy consumption attracts a charge of Sh50 per kilowatt-hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Ajay Goel, the company&#8217;s co-founder and chief executive responsible for international business, riders covering around 100 kilometres daily could save approximately 20 per cent on energy costs compared with petrol. Those travelling 150 kilometres per day could potentially save up to 35 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the actual savings will depend on daily mileage, electricity prices, vehicle financing, maintenance expenses and access to battery-swapping stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The model also removes the need for riders to purchase their own batteries, whose performance declines over time and which eventually require replacement. SUN Mobility manages battery maintenance and replacement under its system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Company Partners With Motorcycle Manufacturers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SUN Mobility does not manufacture or sell motorcycles. Instead, it works with vehicle manufacturers to ensure their electric motorcycles, scooters and three-wheelers can use its battery-swapping network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goel said more than 10 vehicle manufacturers in Kenya were already introducing vehicles compatible with the company&#8217;s platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Globally, SUN Mobility says its technology supports more than 30 manufacturers and over 50 vehicle models. In India, its network serves more than 125,000 vehicles through over 2,000 swapping stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company believes a shared network that supports multiple vehicle brands can attract more riders and make its infrastructure more commercially sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kenya&#8217;s Growing Electric Motorcycle Market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenya&#8217;s motorcycle sector presents a significant opportunity for electric mobility companies because many boda boda riders spend long hours transporting passengers and delivering goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goel said Kenya registered approximately 165,000 new two-wheelers in the previous year, including about 25,000 electric motorcycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company also sees opportunities in electric three-wheelers used for passenger transport and cargo delivery, where lower energy expenses could benefit commercial operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SUN Mobility believes Kenya&#8217;s transport infrastructure, delivery businesses, financing networks and policies supporting electric vehicles make the country a suitable base for expanding into other East African markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expansion Could Create Jobs for Kenyans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company&#8217;s plans could open opportunities for local businesses and workers in vehicle distribution, repairs, spare parts, technical support and battery-swapping station operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SUN Mobility says it already has a 25-member local team and intends to work with Kenyan technicians and service providers as its operations grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company wants to train local workers to install, maintain and repair its equipment instead of depending heavily on technical support from outside Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its wider African ambition is to support more than 160,000 vehicles and establish approximately 2,500 battery-swapping stations within five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, achieving these targets will depend on affordable electric motorcycles, accessible financing, reliable battery supplies, trained technicians and sufficient swapping stations to serve riders conveniently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company&#8217;s expansion comes as electric mobility gains ground across Africa, with Kenya positioning itself as an important market for cleaner commercial transport.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Indian electric mobility company is expanding its operations in Kenya as it seeks to help commercial motorcycle riders move away from petrol-powered bikes to electric alternatives.
