Before relocating to the US, she spent several years in a refugee camp in Kenya.

She was 12 years old when her family arrived in the United States and became a naturalised American citizen in 2000.

According to reports by Reuters, federal agents searched Omar’s Washington, DC, residence on October 12 as part of an investigation into her family’s immigration history.

Investigators are examining whether Omar or members of her family provided inaccurate information during the immigration process or when applying for US citizenship.

The search warrant reportedly listed conspiracy, immigration fraud and making false statements on immigration documents among the potential offences under investigation.

Federal agents reportedly seized Omar’s personal phone during the search, while prosecutors issued more than a dozen subpoenas, including to at least one of her relatives.

Omar Responds to Immigration Investigation

The investigation could lead the US government to pursue legal action to revoke Omar’s citizenship if authorities establish that it was obtained unlawfully.

However, no finding of wrongdoing has been made, and the congresswoman has denied the allegations.

Omar described the search of her residence as an act of political intimidation, accusing President Donald Trump’s administration of targeting her because of her political positions.

The investigation has attracted attention because it involves a sitting member of Congress and comes just weeks before the US midterm elections.

The Department of Justice has not publicly disclosed the specific evidence underpinning the investigation.

Why Omar’s Citizenship Is Under Scrutiny

Omar’s immigration history has attracted controversy for years, with allegations about her background repeatedly circulating in political debates.

The renewed investigation is examining records connected to her arrival in the United States and the process through which she obtained citizenship.

Under US law, naturalised citizenship can be revoked through legal proceedings if the government proves that it was obtained illegally or through the deliberate concealment or misrepresentation of material facts.

Any attempt to revoke Omar’s citizenship would therefore require the government to establish the relevant legal grounds.

The case also comes amid broader efforts by the Trump administration to investigate immigration violations and pursue denaturalisation cases involving some naturalised US citizens.

For now, the investigation remains ongoing, and Omar continues to serve in Congress as authorities examine the allegations against her.

US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is facing a federal investigation into her decades-old immigration records, a case that could potentially put her American citizenship at risk and raise questions about her future in the United States.
