Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sharply criticized Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja for what he describes as irresponsible leadership and deliberate avoidance of dialogue.
In a strongly worded post on his X account, Gachagua accused Kanja of resorting to unorthodox methods and playing a hide-and-seek game to dodge a scheduled meeting with leaders of the United Opposition.
The meeting was intended to review progress on pressing issues, including alleged police brutality, ongoing church attacks, and rising violence against women and children. Gachagua claimed that despite the appointment, Kanja avoided direct engagement, leaving opposition figures to interact only with junior officers.
He particularly highlighted the lack of action following the violent disruption at ACK Witima Church in Othaya, Nyeri County—where tear gas was reportedly lobbed during a service he attended—labeling it part of a broader strategy to shield perpetrators and normalize impunity. Gachagua emphasized that the police exist to serve Kenyans, not intimidate them, and insisted that the law must apply equally to all.
Concluding defiantly, he vowed that the opposition would return to Kanja’s office, declaring: “You can run, but you will not hide, Mr. Kanja Douglas.” Accompanied by images of opposition supporters marching, the post underscores escalating tensions between the government and opposition over security and accountability.
The confrontation highlights deepening concerns about police conduct and impartiality in addressing public safety threats amid Kenya’s volatile political landscape.
