U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) was sprayed with an unknown substance by a man in the audience in a dramatic incident at a town hall event in Minneapolis on January 27, 2026,
The attack occurred moments after Omar called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and demanded the resignation or impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem amid ongoing tensions over federal immigration enforcement in the city.
According to reports from multiple sources, including The New York Times, NPR, and Minneapolis police, the assailant — identified as 55-year-old Anthony Kazmierczak — rushed the podium from the front row and used a syringe to spray a foul-smelling liquid (described by some as vinegar-like or acidic) onto Omar’s clothing.
Security quickly tackled and detained him, and he was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault. Forensic teams processed the scene, but no injuries were reported to Omar.

Despite staff and attendees urging her to pause or seek medical attention, Omar defiantly continued her remarks.
“We will continue,” she said. “These f****** a**holes are not going to get away with it.” She later emphasized resilience, stating, “We are Minnesota strong and we will stay resilient in the face of whatever they might throw at us.”
The event unfolded against heightened political tensions, including recent ICE-related incidents and prior criticism of Omar by President Trump.

Omar’s office confirmed she was unharmed and vowed not to let “bullies win.” The incident has drawn bipartisan condemnation, highlighting concerns over political violence.
