Kenyan lawyer Donald Kipkorir has sparked debate with his remarks on the African Nations Championship (CHAN), even as the country celebrates the achievements of Harambee Stars.
Through his official X account, Kipkorir urged fans to put the tournament into perspective, stressing that CHAN operates under different rules from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to Kipkorir, CHAN excludes players who are contracted in top European leagues such as those in England, France, Portugal, Spain, and Germany.
He argued that this restriction means participating nations like Morocco, South Africa, Guinea, DR Congo, Zambia, Algeria, and Burkina Faso are fielding players who have not made the cut for Europe’s elite competitions.
“CHAN is essentially a junior league to AFCON,” Kipkorir stated, suggesting that the quality of football at CHAN cannot be compared to that of Africa’s premier tournament, where foreign-based professionals feature prominently.

His comments have stirred mixed reactions, with some agreeing that CHAN offers a platform mainly for home-based players to showcase their skills, while others believe the competition still holds significant value in nurturing local talent and strengthening domestic leagues across the continent.
