Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has expressed outrage after being denied a visa to the United Kingdom, where he was scheduled to attend the Cambridge Conference this weekend. According to Malema through his official X account, the British authorities failed to provide a substantive reason for the rejection, raising concerns about political censorship.
Malema stated, “The British authorities have denied me a visa to London for the Cambridge Conference this weekend, providing no substantial justification. It is clear to me that this is an attempt to silence a dissenting political perspective.”
Malema revealed that he and his team were already at OR Tambo International Airport when they received a regret letter from the British High Commission, just four hours before their planned departure. He described the timing and manner of the communication as both “unacceptable and spineless.”
The EFF leader’s invitation to the Cambridge Conference marked a significant opportunity to engage in global discourse on African political and economic issues. His absence now raises questions about the openness of democratic platforms to critical African voices.
While the UK authorities have yet to issue an official explanation, the incident has already sparked a wave of criticism online, with many of Malema’s supporters condemning the move as an affront to freedom of speech and political diversity.
