Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the sudden passing of Dr. Ricky AJ Syngkon, the Lok Sabha MP representing Shillong, Meghalaya.
Through her official X account, Modi described being “saddened” by the news and highlighted Syngkon’s dedicated service to the people of Meghalaya. He extended condolences to the late MP’s family, friends, and supporters, praying for the departed soul to rest in peace.
Dr. Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, aged 54 and affiliated with the Voice of the People Party (VPP), tragically died on February 19, 2026, after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Reports indicate he collapsed while playing futsal (a form of indoor football) with friends in Mawiong, on the outskirts of Shillong. He was rushed to a local community health center and later transferred to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital, where he was declared dead around 7-8 PM.
Syngkon, who held advanced degrees including a PhD in Economics, was one of Meghalaya’s two Lok Sabha representatives and known for his articulate advocacy for the state’s interests in Parliament. His untimely demise has sent shockwaves across Meghalaya’s political landscape, prompting tributes from leaders across parties.
