Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed profound grief over a devastating avalanche near Lake Tahoe that claimed multiple lives, including individuals from the San Francisco Bay Area.
Through her official X account, Pelosi wrote: “Heartbroken by the tragic avalanche at Lake Tahoe. Our prayers are with the survivors and the families who lost loved ones, including those from our San Francisco community.” She extended gratitude to first responders who “risked their safety” during daring rescue operations.
The incident occurred on February 17, 2026, when a massive, football-field-sized avalanche struck a group of 15 backcountry skiers—comprising clients and guides from Blackbird Mountain Guides—near Castle Peak in the Sierra Nevada, close to Truckee.
The slide, triggered amid heavy snowfall and unstable snowpack conditions, ranks as California’s deadliest avalanche in modern recorded history.
Authorities confirmed eight fatalities, with one skier still missing and presumed dead. Six survivors endured hours under harsh conditions before rescue.
Families identified six of the victims as experienced mothers and close friends from the Bay Area, Idaho, and the Tahoe region, bonded by their passion for the outdoors.

The tragedy has deeply affected Northern California communities, particularly San Francisco and Marin County, where several victims resided.
Pelosi’s message underscores the local impact and highlights collective sorrow and appreciation for emergency services amid ongoing recovery efforts hampered by severe weather.
