Just a day ago, chaos erupted during a “Linda Mwananchi” rally led by Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna in Kitengela, Kajiado County. Police intervened with tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the crowd, resulting in violence that claimed at least one life.
The victim was identified as 28-year-old Vincent Ayomo, a garage worker on Old Namanga Road. According to his family, Ayomo was shot in the face while running errands near the rally site, not actively participating. He was rushed to a mortuary in Nairobi, where relatives confirmed his identity.
Through his official X account, Sifuna condemned the incident as a “senseless and needless killing by Ruto’s regime.”
He extended condolences to Ayomo’s family, demanded justice and accountability, and linked the tragedy to broader issues of state-sponsored violence against peaceful assemblies.
Sifuna emphasized that Ayomo committed no crime and was exercising his constitutional right to assembly amid national concerns like famine and governance failures.
Opposition figures have alleged excessive force, with some reports claiming additional deaths and injuries. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the shooting.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions over police conduct during political gatherings in Kenya, fueling calls for reform and an end to impunity.
