Ange Postecoglou has opened up about his frustrations during his time at Tottenham Hotspur, revealing the Premier League-proven players he targeted after a fifth-place finish in his debut season.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano through his official X account, the former Spurs manager explained his ambition to elevate the team: “After my first season at Spurs, I wanted PL proven players. I was looking at Pedro Neto, Mbeumo, Semenyo and Marc Guehi.”
These targets—winger Pedro Neto (who later joined Chelsea), Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo (now at Manchester United), Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo (who moved to Manchester City), and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi (also to Man City)—represented ready-made additions to push Spurs toward the top.
Instead, financial constraints after missing Champions League qualification forced a different approach. “We ended up signing Solanke, I really like him, and three very good teenagers,” Postecoglou said, referring to Dominic Solanke’s arrival from Bournemouth and young talents like Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, and Wilson Odobert.
While praising Solanke and the prospects’ potential, Postecoglou implied the youth-focused signings fell short of the immediate impact needed to challenge the elite.

His comments, amid Tottenham’s turbulent period, highlight ongoing debates about the club’s transfer strategy and ambition.
