The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has undergone a significant leadership change following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on February 11, 2026. The party announced the immediate removal of its Secretary General (SG), Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, from his responsibilities.
According to ODM party through their official X account, the NEC resolved to relieve Sifuna of his duties with immediate effect. Hon. Catherine Omanyo, one of the Deputy Secretaries General and Busia Woman Representative, has been appointed to act in the SG position. She will hold the office until a substantive holder is elected through proper party processes.
This development comes amid reported internal divisions within ODM, including concerns over indiscipline at senior levels and differing alignments on political directions following the party’s cooperation with the ruling Kenya Kwanza government. Sifuna, a vocal critic and prominent figure in opposition politics, had recently voiced frustrations over issues like parallel funding for party activities and the direction of ODM.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporters lamenting the move as a blow to the party’s legacy under Raila Odinga, while others see it as necessary for restoring order. Sifuna’s ouster could reshape ODM’s internal dynamics and its role in Kenya’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
The party emphasized that the change aims to strengthen discipline and unity, though it highlights ongoing tensions within one of Kenya’s major political outfits.
