Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sharply rebuked Vice President JD Vance after his office deleted an official X post that explicitly acknowledged the Armenian Genocide during his recent visit to Armenia.
Through her official X account, Pelosi highlighted her 2022 visit to Armenia as Speaker, where her congressional delegation stood at the Tsitsernakaberd memorial and spoke clearly and unapologetically about the genocide, emphasizing that truth matters.
She noted bipartisan U.S. recognition milestones: the House’s 2019 resolution and President Biden’s 2021 formal acknowledgment—contrasting these with what she called a “shameful” reversal under the Trump administration in 2022.
Pelosi expressed deep disappointment at the deletion of Vance’s post, which originally described him and Second Lady Usha Vance attending a wreath-laying ceremony “to honor the victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide.”

The post was quickly removed, with Vance’s office attributing it to a staff error. A replacement version omitted the term “genocide,” aligning with the current administration’s policy of avoiding the word, amid sensitivities with U.S. ally Turkey, which denies the events constituted genocide.
Pelosi argued that erasing history dishonors victims and weakens U.S. commitment to human rights globally.

The incident, during Vance’s February 10, 2026, visit to Yerevan’s memorial, sparked criticism from Armenian advocacy groups and highlighted ongoing tensions in U.S. foreign policy language on historical atrocities.
