Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican congresswoman from South Carolina, recently posted a forceful message on X advocating for stricter voter eligibility rules in U.S. federal elections.
In her post, she emphasized that only American citizens should vote in American elections, arguing that non-citizens lack this right—just as Americans cannot vote in other countries like Iceland, Ireland, Honduras, Chile, Slovakia, or Singapore.
Mace highlighted everyday activities requiring identification, such as renting an apartment, driving, buying cigarettes, boarding a plane, opening a bank account, getting a job, or picking up a prescription.
She questioned why similar proof of citizenship or ID shouldn’t be required to vote, framing it as common sense to protect election integrity.
The post promotes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, legislation she supports that requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for federal voter registration.
Introduced by Rep. Chip Roy and backed by Mace, the bill has passed the House multiple times (including in 2025) but faces challenges in the Senate.
Mace argues it closes loopholes and prevents non-citizen voting, which she and supporters see as a threat to democracy.
Critics contend such measures could complicate registration for eligible citizens lacking easy access to documents like passports or birth certificates, though instances of non-citizen voting remain rare.

Mace’s video clip from a congressional hearing reinforces her point, questioning ID requirements in contexts like Texas apartment rentals. Her call urges passage of the SAVE Act to “save the integrity of our democracy.”
