After it was announced that Kibabii University would be hosting Kenya Music Festival this year, many Western Region participants celebrated the move but today, a new development has stirred discussions within the Kenya Music Festival (KMF) community.
That is after Kibabii University in Bungoma County declining a request to host the KMF National Competitions scheduled for August 2026.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeyo, cited a scheduling conflict in a formal letter dated February 2, 2026.
Special and supplementary examinations are set to run from August 3 to August 14, 2026, overlapping with the proposed festival dates, making it impossible to accommodate the event.
The rejection has prompted varied reactions, particularly from Western Region stakeholders who had anticipated hosting the prestigious national event in their region.
In a WhatsApp group chat for the Official KMF Western Region, Chairman Evans Agaya addressed members calmly amid growing concerns.

He emphasized that national festival venues are typically organized at the highest level, involving Principal Secretaries from both Basic and Higher Education.
“Let us not panic,” Agaya urged. “The Ministry of Education will handle this and give us an appropriate feedback.”
His measured response highlighted confidence in the Ministry’s processes, while some group members expressed light-hearted disappointment or humorously suggested alternatives like shifting the event to Mombasa for a “night out” vibe.
Despite the setback, Agaya’s call for patience reflects optimism that the Ministry will soon announce a suitable alternative venue, ensuring the 2026 KMF Nationals proceed smoothly.

The festival remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s youth talent development, drawing millions in participation annually.
