Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has publicly assured Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki that his party is not targeting the deputy presidency.
Speaking during the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) business support programme in Kisumu on February 2, 2026, where President William Ruto disbursed Sh220 million to thousands of youth entrepreneurs from Kisumu, Siaya, and Homa Bay counties, Dr. Oginga addressed Kindiki directly.
He emphasized that ODM’s focus remains on securing a fair share of national opportunities for its members and supporters, rather than pursuing specific high offices like the DP position.
“As we move forward, we are not going to look for less. But Deputy President, do not think that we are after your job or want to chase you away. You are our friend, and as we negotiate, we will negotiate for what our people and party deserve,” Oginga stated.
He further stressed ODM’s national character, rejecting tribalism and calling for equitable distribution of the “national cake.”
The remarks mark a softening from Oginga’s earlier position late last year, when he indicated ODM would not settle for anything less than the deputy presidency in potential deals with President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Coming shortly after reports of ODM demanding a 50-50 power-sharing arrangement, this assurance appears aimed at easing tensions, particularly in the Mt. Kenya region, a key voting bloc wary of shifts in the current administration following the impeachment of former DP Rigathi Gachagua.
The event, attended by Ruto, Kindiki, and Oginga, highlighted youth empowerment and national unity under the broad-based government.
Kindiki praised the collaboration, noting the country is “stronger together” with ODM’s involvement.

This olive branch signals efforts to stabilize coalition negotiations ahead of the 2027 elections, prioritizing inclusive development over personal rivalries.
