The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released a fresh statement providing an update on the ongoing probe into the fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of former Cabinet minister and veteran politician Hon. Cyrus Jirongo.
The accident occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
According to the DCI, the inquiry is still ongoing and has been described as wide-ranging and comprehensive.
Investigators have been examining information from multiple sources while recording statements from individuals considered relevant to the case.
So far, 28 people have recorded statements, including seven passengers who were travelling in the bus involved in the tragic incident and who voluntarily presented themselves to assist with investigations.
Among high-profile individuals who have cooperated with detectives is National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, who recorded his statement during the early stages of the inquiry.

Also mentioned are Ms. Eunice Chelagat and her husband, Hon. George Khaniri, a close friend of the late Jirongo.
Hon. Khaniri and his wife reportedly visited the accident scene on the day of the incident and facilitated the transfer of Jirongo’s body from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home.
The DCI further disclosed findings from the autopsy, which revealed that Jirongo suffered severe crush chest injuries, a broken sternum, and lacerations to vital organs, including the heart, liver, and kidneys.
The cause of death was determined to be multiple crush injuries resulting from blunt force trauma.
As investigations continue, the DCI has urged the media, political leaders, and members of the public to exercise restraint and avoid speculative statements that could compromise the inquiry or unfairly damage reputations.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to impartial and expeditious investigations, noting that the completed inquiry file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for appropriate action.
