Former US Vice President Mike Pence has reignited debate over America’s foreign policy toward Iran after praising President Donald Trump’s remarks in support of Iranian protesters.
In a post shared on X, Pence thanked Trump for publicly backing what he described as the “brave people of Iran,” contrasting Trump’s approach with that of former President Barack Obama during Iran’s 2009 Green Revolution.
Pence argued that during the mass protests that followed Iran’s disputed 2009 presidential election, the Obama administration was reluctant to openly support demonstrators challenging the regime.
According to Pence, Congress had to pass a resolution expressing solidarity with the Iranian people before Obama was willing to speak out.

He suggested this hesitation sent the wrong message at a critical moment for pro-democracy activists in Iran.
The post references remarks by Trump, shared by a Rapid Response account, in which Trump urged Iranian protesters to continue demonstrating, document abuses, and hold perpetrators accountable in the future.
Pence framed these comments as clear moral leadership, asserting that vocal US support matters to those resisting authoritarian rule. He concluded with the declaration that “America stands with the brave people of Iran,” accompanied by the hashtag #FreeIran.
Pence’s statement fits into a long-running partisan divide in US politics over how Washington should respond to popular uprisings abroad.
Supporters of a more outspoken approach argue that public backing can embolden protesters and pressure repressive governments. Critics, however, caution that overt US involvement can be used by regimes to discredit opposition movements as foreign-backed.

The renewed discussion also comes amid ongoing unrest and dissatisfaction inside Iran, keeping the question of US policy toward Tehran firmly in the political spotlight.
Pence’s comments underscore how past events like the Green Revolution continue to shape current debates over American leadership, intervention, and the promotion of democratic values overseas.
