Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has stirred the political waters after urging Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to firmly declare his candidature for the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on September 25, 2025, Cherargei argued that Kalonzo has been sidelined for too long despite his decades of political experience and previous attempts at the presidency.
“Kalonzo must run for President. In fact, in 2013, he was Raila’s running mate, in 2017 he was again a running mate, and in 2022 they dropped him. It’s now or never because after 2032, we will want all these people who have stayed in politics for over 40 years to go home,” Cherargei stated.

The senator, a close ally of President William Ruto, suggested that Kalonzo risks fading into political irrelevance if he fails to make a bold bid in 2027.
His remarks highlight the growing debate within the opposition ranks over succession politics, especially following Raila Odinga’s repeated presidential bids and his entrance into the broad based governmnet, moves that have left many questioning the future leadership of the opposition.
Kalonzo, who has been a consistent figure in Kenya’s political landscape since the 1980s, has often been described as a “kingmaker” due to his strategic alliances.
However, his decision to back Raila Odinga in three successive elections without clinching the top seat himself has drawn criticism from both supporters and rivals.
Cherargei’s call is also viewed as a political tactic, possibly aimed at widening divisions within the opposition ahead of 2027.

By encouraging Kalonzo to run, the ruling UDA side could be banking on splitting the opposition vote, thus boosting President Ruto’s chances of re-election.
As the 2027 race begins to take shape, all eyes will be on Kalonzo Musyoka to see whether he finally makes a decisive move towards the presidency or continues to play the role of a power broker in Kenya’s high-stakes political arena.
