United Democratic Alliance (UDA) diehard Hassan Omar has strongly criticized Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over his decision to gazette the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.
Omar, who is also the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) legislator, accused the CS of rushing into a sensitive matter without fully considering its implications on Kenya’s Muslim community and the country’s diplomatic interests.
According to Omar, the classification of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group is not only controversial but also risks straining relations with countries where the movement operates legally as a political and social organization.

He noted that the Muslim Brotherhood has diverse operations across the Middle East and North Africa, with some governments allowing it to participate in mainstream politics.
“By taking such a drastic stance without adequate consultation, the CS is undermining Kenya’s foreign policy interests and unnecessarily antagonizing a section of our population,” Omar argued.
The former Mombasa Senator further cautioned that Murkomen’s move could fuel perceptions of bias against Muslims in Kenya, thereby undermining the country’s unity and counterterrorism efforts.
He stressed that Kenya must differentiate between violent extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab and movements that engage in political or social activism.
Omar also challenged the government to ensure that its counterterrorism policies are guided by factual intelligence and broad stakeholder consultations rather than external pressures.

He called on President William Ruto to intervene, warning that such unilateral declarations could have long-term security and diplomatic repercussions.
His remarks come amid growing debate within the Muslim community and human rights circles over whether the gazettement was justified, with many urging the government to reconsider its position.
