President Donald Trump on Thursday took to his Truth Social platform to celebrate a major legislative victory after the House advanced his tax cut and spending bill by a narrow margin of 219-213.
In a characteristically bold statement, Trump declared, “What a great night it was. One of the most consequential Bills ever. The USA is the ‘HOTTEST’ Country in the World, by far!!!”
The bill, which combines tax reductions with increased federal spending, is a cornerstone of Trump’s economic vision. A final vote on the bill was expected later Thursday, potentially clearing it ahead of the symbolic July 4 deadline Trump had pushed for.
However, Democrats sought to stall its passage. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., launched a marathon floor speech in the early morning hours, exercising his “magic minutes” privilege as party leader to occupy the House floor indefinitely.
In a post on X at around 5 a.m. ET, Jeffries confirmed his effort to delay the bill, and as of 10:30 a.m. ET, he was still speaking.
The legislative showdown underscores the deep partisan divide in Washington, with Republicans touting the bill as vital for economic growth and Democrats warning of its impact on fiscal stability and social programs.
